This project was another for GCT studios creating assets for the starter set. The brief was to update and add 33 additional tokens to their system representing various game play effects. The project was developed from pencil sketches all the way up to finalised digital designs that were ultimately printed and distributed in their new starter set released in 2021. The tokens are also to be released as print at home versions.
These are the finalised token designs that were sent to print. This layout contains the guides for printable artwork in the blue dash and the cutters mark in yellow. The confined spaces of the final print layouts were quite challenging to maintain readability for the final cuts which were roughly 20mm diameter.
The coins have the Japanese characters for gold and silver embossed into them as well as the kanji for the numbers 1 and 2  to add a level of intricacy of the design.
The "Poison" (green skull) and "Bleed" (red splatter) went through several rounds of design to attain a level of visual clarity between their shapes. Previous designs were very similar with mainly colour differences to set them apart, this was problematic for colour blind players during play testing so had to be developed further.
The "Impetuous" token is represented through an adaption of Taiso Yoshitosis print of Sugiwara no Michizane (conjuring a thunderstorm). The design represents sudden and unpredictable movement whilst maintaining the classical style of traditional eastern (Japanese in this case) art.
This is a sample from my sketchbook showing part of the development process. this was quite near the end of the sketching process and several drafts had been developed to achieve the final concepts for digital development. Some designs such as "Impetuous" had to be redeveloped post digital development as the designs were too complex for small tokens.
